Tip Calculator

I'll be honest — I used to be terrible at tipping math. Standing at a restaurant table, phone calculator out, trying to figure out 18% of $47.83 while everyone watches... not my finest moments. That's exactly why I built this tip calculator — type the bill, tap a percentage, done.

It also splits the bill between friends, so nobody has to do that awkward "okay, who had the salad?" math at the end of dinner.

💰 Tip Calculator

Calculate restaurant tips and split the bill with friends.

Tip Amount$0.00
Total Bill$0.00
Each Person Pays$0.00

How to use this tip calculator

  1. Enter your bill amount — for example, 85.50.
  2. Tap a tip percentage (10%, 15%, 20%, 25%) or type a custom one.
  3. If you're splitting, set how many people are sharing the bill.
  4. Read your tip amount, total bill, and what each person pays — instantly.

Worked example

Dinner for four

Say your group's bill is $120 and you want to leave 18%. That's a $21.60 tip and a $141.60 total — split four ways, each person pays $35.40. Try it above: type 120, tap 18% (or type 18 in the custom box), set split to 4.

The standard in the US is 15–20% for sit-down restaurants, a bit more for exceptional service. For more tipping stories and etiquette, read my tip calculator guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for sit-down service — 15% for okay service, 18–20% for good service, and more when someone goes above and beyond. For takeout or counter service, tipping is optional but a few dollars is always appreciated.

Should I tip on the tax amount?

Most etiquette guides say to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, not the total with tax. In practice the difference is small — on a $50 bill, tipping on $50 vs $54 differs by less than a dollar. Don't stress about it.

How do I split a bill evenly?

Enter the full bill, choose your tip percent, then set the number of people. The calculator shows exactly what each person owes, tip included — no arguments, no calculator app passed around the table.

What is a good tip for delivery drivers?

Around 15–20%, or a minimum of $3–$5 — whichever is more. A little extra in bad weather goes a long way.
